With This Pool, You Didn't Need Airconditioning

Pete with sisters Cathy, Pat, Pam 2007 Carnivore Show

I mentioned before that Pete had a pool in the backyard on East 18th Street. It was about 4 1/2 feet to 5 feet high, above ground and round. The backyard was filled with oak and maple trees, so in the summer when there was full leaves on the trees, there was no sun. And man, was that water cold.

Now, being a kid, you know how we are. Cold water means nothing to us. This water, well, even in the hottest of weather, it brought an instant chill to your body. It took hours before you could get used to it, and that was only because you really couldn't feel your toes and legs. But, we all fought to see who could be first in the water on pool opening day.

Every Wednesday we had half a day so that public school kids could go to religious instructions. So, Pete Sr and Peter would open the pool in June before school ended so we could play in the pool on those half days. Peter made it a contest to see who could run off the bus, down the street, into the house, change and jump into the pool first.

So, cousins Nancy, Michelle, Tara, Marie and I would race Peter through the street, screaming and dragging our book bags while trying to outrun him. But he gargantuan long legs would always out run us. We'd try to hit him with our book bags or throw our lunch boxes at him, but still he'd get ahead of us and be in the water waiting with the hose in hand.

I remember he cheated by wearing his swimming trunks under his pants one day, so that all he had to do was strip and jump in. For us, we had shirts, vests, jumpers and shirts to get off, before changing into our bathing suits and running out the back door before Nettie realized we were in the house.

One Wednesday when Peter got in the pool first, he wet down the porch with water, knowing full well we were going to be running from the porch and jumping in the water. But because it was wet, we all slipped and piled ontop of each other, skidding into the water in a lump of girls. After getting kicked in the face by Michelle stepping over me, Nancy, Michelle and I took Peter down into the water to drown him for being .... well ... a boy ! And all he could do was laugh and tell us how stupid we looked all clumped up as we skidded off the porch. I think he laughed all day.

  1. Funny how kids dont play attention to the weather or feel the temperature, its all about playing. I think I would of made it my mission to get Peter back as much as possible, he always seemed to have a plan to get you girls in some way. I used to jump into the school pool in my uniform every afternoon but after about 4 days everyone wanted to do it and the teachers realised what was happening and patrolled the pool so that was the end of that. I wish I could have seen Carnivore live. I love their music, and Peters lyrics make me laugh.....Spread your legs I'll seed your eggs! My eyes full of lust my balls gonna bust, Well I think its hysterical anyway.

Another touching story of a family that really knew how to love, to be a family. The pool story well I also remember in NY going to the above ground pools, my relatives had those. And we'd be having the time of our young lives. those were such great memories. Your family was just like mine, big brother Peter (I had a younger brother) being the life of the party. He had that beautiful smile..in this picture he's smiling that smile. Wow I miss that man. I remember Howard Stern talking about Peter's death. That was a very sad day. I remember crying that day. Peter you were someone we will always always love and cherish in our hearts. You have a dynamite family who are being so generous sharing their many good memories of you. It's not easy and we appreciate each story. Peace to you Peter. Thank you again for sharing.

  16. lol...so could picture that momment...lol.ahhhh boys.. can so relate with having a little brother.lol.did you girls ever get him back for that? if so would love to hear that story too.
we also had one of those above ground pools in our backyard with trees around. both the house and the trees would block the sun and the water was freezing when first getting in..did you all try to warm the water with jugs of hot water too? cause thats what my brother and a friend of his tried to do one day...lol..didnt work the water was still cold..lol.they wasted goin up and down the stairs to fill and refill those jugs for basically nothing..lol.
ahhh another good story.even though I didnt know Peter personally he is still missed alot by me and many others all over the world.he was a very special person.a bit of a pill at times but still very special. miss him alot everyday as Im sure you all do too over there. a day doesnt go by when something will remind me of him in one way or another. theres this young guy I have met on facebook that reminds me of Peter a bit with his ummm bathroom humor..lol. think Peter would have liked him. the kid is a riot at times kind of like Peter was..lol.
anyways another good story.. thanks so much for sharing..made me laugh..lol.. so looking forward to the next one.till then ya all take good care. stay safe too.

  18. Please don't go, please don't go. His words his thoughts, his genius. Peter you were and will remain always thru eternity the most unique, larger than life, gorgeous, breathtakingly beautiful man/musician of all time. No one can touch that. You were created from heaven sent to us to delight, to enthrawl, to entise, to enlighten (I don't care about my spelling) I'm emotional about this man His music his aura, his intensity. That is something rare. Each day I start the day with lit candles to honor your memory. Shine bright up in heaven now Peter Steele. We'll look up there in the stars and see you, feel you. Listen to you, watch you. Remember you. That's how deeply he touches me and so many. Remember to care more about each other now world, get involved in your loved ones well being. Care more. Love more. Please.

  19. Love the photo! Pete's sisters are an attractive bunch. That was probably trouble waiting to happen!
Pete did seem to enjoy pre-meditated pranking. I can only imagine the amount of satisfaction all of you provided him with when he got to see the slipping, the toppling and the resultant pile of fallen girls!
    Funny how life repeats itself.

  20. Great story and love the photo. It sounds typical of Peter to have his swim shorts on under his pants, get in the pool first, and be waiting with the hose to squirt the girls. Too funny! That pool description sounds like something out of a Type O Album, with all the tall trees and oaks keeping the water freezing cold even on the hottest of days. What fun and memorable times.
