Warm Beer - Lousy Food

Marie and I were talking the other day about some of the places Peter took us when we were teenagers so that we would get an opportunity to enjoy the nightlife. We'd go to Zappa's ... L'Amours ... he'd drop us off at Roller Palace ... but the one place we all enjoyed in Brooklyn which doesn't exist anymore was billed as "Warm Beer & Lousy Food ... The Crazy Country Club."

I don't know why anyone wrote a book about the place, but if you are interested check out:  http://www.amazon.com/Warm-Beer-Lousy-Food-Country/dp/1440171750

Peter brought us there for the first time in the early 90s, telling the girls to make sure we wore skirts so we'd look older. Little did we know that the joke was on us, because the moment you walked though the door, a wind machine on the floor blew your skirt up and all the bouncers laughed at you.

We remember being there with Peter and his then girlfriend Donna (later his wife). While Marie, my cousins and Donna went to the ladies room, I sat at the table with Peter as he ordered up some greasy dishes. All of the sudden over the loud speaker you could hear Donna and Nancy bitching about someone. Then you heard the toilet flush, girls talking about their hair and who the ugly guy at the next table was. They didn't know it and Peter didn't tell them that the place was rigged with a microphone in the bathrooms. When they came to the table, they didn't understand why we were laughing at them and why people were pointing.

The place was a dive ... but they didn't proof anyone. Though the place was called a country club, I never heard anything but comedians, metal and hardcore.

The Crazy Country Club was one of Peter's favorite places to go. He would find out what comedians were there and then invite a crew to a night out. It was one of our favorite memories of being with Pete.

Btw, Don't you love that photo ?

  1. Sounds like a fun place to be. Most clubs now days are so pretentious, I love clubs that dont care about who you are or what you look like. They are always more fun because people are relaxed and not trying to impress others with how much better they are than everyone else. Microphones in the bathroom, that could cause some problems with the way girls bitch about each other. Just hearing the toilet conversations would be worth going to the club for.
Darcie I think you are enjoying giving us bits of information so we ask for more! Now I know for sure that Peter was married so you have to give us the story. Is she the one Peter was with for 10 years? Was she the one who fucked around on him? Which songs were written about her?. The end of my questions.

  3. I knew he was married, found some quick info online a while back, got married on Halloween. and the tattoo on his chest is about her and him. But I would LOVE to see a pic, and who the hell this Elizabeth chic was. I cant find anything on her other than the little movie clip.
I digress....well ladies, when you went into this club and you had a skirt on, best be wearing the correct day- panties. Remember those Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday etc underwear? Those bouncers would be laughing even harder at you if you had Monday undies and it was Thursday. LMAO

  4. That is a great story/ memory to share with us. I can only imagine Pete being such a prankster. If he was my uncle I'd probably be threatening him constantly for pulling all that crap on us- all the while loving to have him for an uncle. <3 you girls were are so very lucky to have had 48 years with such an incredible, lovable, smart assed, big hearted green giant. And I know I don't have to tell you that. Take care! Love, Holly

  9. Too bad it doesn't exist anymore! Sounds like a fun place to go check out. Great story! I enjoy hearing about the love and closeness you all had in your family. It makes me happy that he had that in his life and that you have it too. Thanks and peace.

  10. Off the subject, but did Peter leave any poetry or lyrics that weren't included on an album? If so, could you, would you share some with us? He could put feelings into words so well...

  11. Yeah! I am back online and able to read the blog since my move! I really missed checking this and have to go through the old posts I missed. Today's Blog was interesting and funny. I never heard of The Crazy Country Club before. I have been to L'Amours a few times before. It is a good thing bathrooms I have been in at clubs before had no microphones or else it would have not been such a fun evening or maybe it would have been crazy fun. Who knows. About Donna, Peter mentioned that he was married before and I think I remember her name in an interview some where. He said it felt like they were just playing house and both decided to call it quits. I would also love to see a picture from their Halloween wedding and hear more about her as well. I still wonder if Elizabeth was Peter's muse for October Rust? Peter was so funny. In one interview I recall him saying he would not go down the aisle agin unless it was in a box. He always made the dreary into a joke and that is why we love him. It still pains me that he is gone and I can only imagine how hard it has hit you guys, his family. Thanks for sharing and that is an intense photo.---Jessica (Black Number 1)

  16. Wow. I thought I knew everything about Peter (within reason), but I never knew that he was married. He never mentioned it in any of the interviews that I have ever read or seen. Nobody did. I even knew he was the best man in Lou Beato's wedding, and have a picture of Peter with short hair to prove it. But Peter married? Interesting.

  17. My boy friend in 1983 took me there....I was wearing a full skirt with stockings and garter belt and very sheer panties...when we entered , we were detained in front...a spotlite came on and a large Mexican straw hat dropped from the ceiling onto my head..I raised my hands to move it...and the air jets blasted my dress over my head..exposing everything to the Fri. nite crowd.I know pics were taken..luv to see...Dee
