So, when I asked if TON could be copied successfully, I got a couple of good responses. Comparisons aside, because you know we are partial when it comes to Peter's voice and music. I do not post this to cause ridicule. I post this because Peter would be bewildered that tribute bands exist. And the type of person that he was, he would have shown up at a "Bloody Kisses" show, paid full price to support musicians. (though I can't imagine what he would have shouted from the audience). Besides Bloody Kisses in Ireland, I know of another tribute in Staten Island. Here is what one of our For The Love Of Pete Steele family has written:
It is with the utmost respect and honour when my friends and I get onto a stage to play Pete's music to his loyal fans. We don't make money from it - it's not about money - it's about paying our respects as 4 massive TON fans and to keep Pete's music alive and played loudly and live - the way it's supposed to be! You can read a review of one of the shows here; http://www.metalireland.com/2011/08/21/bloody-kisses-honey-for-christ-mourning-of-the-heretic-live-review/ Or search for Bloody Kisses tribute on youtube if you are interested. Pete is always in our hearts and is the reason we do this! Chris

I kinda think Peter would secretly be flattered by the fact that there is a tribute band of TON, although he'd probaly say what the hell are these guys thinking, don't they have any taste in music, lol. Me and my girl are going to see a Led Zeppelin tribute band called Zoso this weekend which I'm sure will be a good time. I would definitely pay to see a TON tribute band and the fact that there is one is good sign that Peter's music will have a lasting impression, imo. What did you think of the Autumns Eyes cover, Darcie? I thought it was pretty good but of course there's nothing better than the real thing! (-)
ReplyDeleteI commented about the Otto's daughter song back in July. As I said then, this tribute song is just sooo beautiful. The lyrics capture perfectly how I felt when I found out Peter was no longer with us. If you haven't heard it,you have to check it out. I promise this song will be stuck in your head for days!
ReplyDeleteIt's just another example of how much Peter meant and how many people he touched during his short time with us.
I met Peter once, when I was 16. He made me & my friends feel so important. I couldn't believe it. He was truly a gentleman & so god-like (in both stature & soul). I will never forget that time in my life & the beautiful person he was!
Both song's are good i enjoyed them both! Thank you for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteOtto's daughter tour with TON for the dead again tour. At least they made it to the Tempe AZ leg of it. They are a good band.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting hooked on Pete's photos, which is probably a bit shallow. This one's absolutely gorgeous, and shows off his facial features beautifully.
ReplyDeleteEcho-ing what Chris said and curious as to the Rataczyk family's opinion of Autumn Eyes as well. While no one will ever equal or surpass Pete, most tribute bands work really hard to offer a solid performance because of their admiration and respect for the talent of the people they're emmulating. From what I hear it's not for the money. That said, rumor has it that the City of Los Angeles pays top-dollar each year to the tribute bands they book to play in Pershing Square each 'winter' (which is not really winter in L.A.) It's worth investigation, especially as an escape from the snowstorms of February.
One would imagine any gentleman taking on the responsibility of performing as the lead singer-bassist in a TON tribute band would have to work very hard to cultivate his talent and need to expect his personal life to change. It would be an ideal opportunity for a single man who's looking around but probably a challenge or burden for an 'attached' man no matter how musically rewarding it would be to play TON's material. There are many thousands of 'widowed' fans still left grieving. Urging ambitious, talented singer-bassists to approach such a plan with caution, but I wish the TON tribute bands success and hope they'll strive for greatness in their performances and with their own music in other projects.
Of course I support anyone keeping Type O Negative and Carnivore's music alive. My husbands band are planning on doing a Carnivore cover soon to add to their set. But like Peter said in the interview a few blogs ago, his songs are so personal and I dont think they will come across the same way sung by someone else. I could also imagine what Peter would be yelling from the audience. He would be very flattered but also dumbfounded as to why anyone would want to cover his songs. The lyrics to Ottos Daughter's song Peter are beautiful. So I support all covers of Type O Negative but am not sure if I want to hear them.
ReplyDeleteHere in Argentina I'm going to play the first tribute in here in a couple of months.
ReplyDeleteboth covers are extremly good. and the ottos daughter song was beautiful. its good to know that people are keeping Peters memory alive,i have seen a few tribute bands, one of then zoso as someone mentioned and they were very good.i dont really know what Peter would have thought, but i think he would have been flattered. what do you think Ratajczyk Family?
ReplyDeleteOnly just saw this.....I have to say, as someone who was lucky enough to see TON at their only Irish show in 1997, Bloody Kisses are the closest to a TON show you'll get. Right down to the affectionate shout at the end of the show of "You Suck!".
ReplyDeleteI think Pete would wonder why on earth someone would pay tribute to TON, but underneath it all,be very pleased and proud. :)
Thank you so much for sharing this! It's hard for me to imagine enjoying someone else performing a TON song, but this is a beautiful tribute. Thanks for keeping Pete's music alive. If I won't ever get to actually see TON in concert, seeing a group of guys who worship them as much as the rest of us performing their songs would definitely be the next best thing.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI meant to leave a comment sooner about this but I wanted to add my view on Type O cover bands or cover songs in general. My memory of Peter singing his songs live is still a fresh memory in mind. I won't ever get the chance to hear or see that happen again. What may have become routine for Peter and the band was not for his fans. When we saw them it was a highlight in our lives that we will take with us and remember forever. I don't want to dull those awesome memories and experience even for a second. Seeing a cover band or listening to covers would do that for me. Yes I can always listen to Type recordings but it will never be like the entire and complete experience of seeing them live. I can see bands inspired by them but trying to record or perform their music is like someone repainting Picasso's work as a tribute. It just does not cut it. I respect these artists for their appreciation of Peter and their effort but I also can't enjoy listening to someone sing Peter's music since it was so deeply personal. I hope I don't sound mean. I am just a dedicated Type O Negative and Peter Steele fan.---Jessica (Black Number 1)
